Rigid vs Soft Hyperbaric Chamber — Which One a Clinic Should Actually Buy

A rigid steel chamber holds a stable 1.5 ATA quietly and safely; a soft tent caps near 1.3 ATA, is noisy and wobbles. For a clinic that bills HBOT, the rigid unit wins on utilization and patient rebook.

The honest difference: pressure.

Soft (inflatable) HBOT chambers are essentially reinforced plastic tents sealed with zippers. They pressurize, but the ceiling is real: most top out around 1.3 ATA, and pressure drifts as the fabric flexes and leaks. A rigid steel cabin like the OZ-150 holds a stable 1.5 ATA to within ±2 kPa for the full session. Because the therapeutic dose is pressure × time × oxygen fraction, a chamber that under-delivers pressure is under-treating patients — and your repeat rate will show it.

Patient experience

This is where the gap is most visible. In a soft tent the patient lies on a mattress in a narrow rubber tube, hunched, with a zipper running past their face. In the OZ-150 they sit upright on a real sofa, with a tempered-glass window and internal air conditioning. Sessions run 60–90 minutes. Comfort matters: comfortable patients rebook, uncomfortable ones do not.

Safety

Rigid cabins are engineered pressure vessels with redundant relief valves, manual emergency vents and tested seals. Soft tents rely on fabric strength and a single fan. In a real emergency, a rigid cabin can be depressurized in seconds by trained staff; a soft tent takes time to open and deflate.

Noise and heat

Compressor noise on a soft tent runs 70–80 dB — like a busy kitchen — and the tent heats up fast. The OZ-150's compressor sits outside the cabin and the cabin itself has built-in AC, so the patient hears under 65 dB and stays at a comfortable temperature. Staff can hold a normal conversation through the intercom.

Total cost of ownership

A soft tent looks cheaper on the invoice, but a chamber that patients actually want to rebook, and that staff can operate confidently, earns back the difference inside the first year. The cheap tent that sits unused because no one likes it is the most expensive one on the balance sheet.
